Bored at JFK airport.

Hey kids. It's been a while. Hope you all had a good nights sleep after eating all that turkey (or tofurkey for all you veggies). Me? Well, not so much. I have a 7a flight to catch to Barbados and decided to stay the night here instead of having to wake up at 3:30a and driving in the middle of the night. Tough life, i know... right? Truth is, I'm really excited for this trip... not only cause it's Barbados, but cause I get to see my aunt, uncle, and 2 cousins who live down there. Pretty awesome huh. I haven't been there since I was 12, so this trip is long overdue. A couple of things i'm looking forward to:

- revisiting Sandy Beach and riding on my Uncle's boat, "Scotch 'N Soda"
- watching my uncle's band, "The Red Men" play Margaritaville tomorrow night
- Scuba Diving in the Caribbean
- hanging with my two younger cousins, Ace and Lil' Ram.
- Fish Buffets
- White Beaches, sunny skies and 80 degree weather
- seeing people driving on the other side of the road
- palm trees and people selling coconuts with straws in them on the side of the road

Don't worry, I'll take lots of photos and will try to upload some of the better ones.

Anyways, I think i'm gonna upload some photos ive taken from the past few weeks or so to curb my boredom. I've been slacking, i know. Onto the photos...

Over and out.

Sometimes...

Charlotte?

If you've been paying attention to the ever expanding FOE VIP list to the right of your screen, you may have scimmed by and maybe even clicked on one of the newest additions - Charlotte Sometimes.

For those of you who have no idea who she is, I suggest doing yourself a favor and checking out her myspace and FOE page and check out her music. I got the chance to hang out with her this past week in Cali while she was there playing a few shows with singer/songwriter James Morrison, and let me tell you - I was blown away.  Not only does she have an incredible voice, but her lyrics and songs are equally as badass. Oh, and for those girls out there who've had their heart broken and have basically said "eff off" to the male species, then this is definitely for you!

Anyways, just thought i'd give her a proper "welcoming" into the FOE family! - Boys watch out!

WARNING!!!

If someone on the street approaches you, and tries to give you a free bag of Doritos that looks like this:

Do yourself a favor and kick that girl/guy in the balls. Seriously, this is the most disgusting flavor of doritos i have ever tried, and I am a HUGE doritos fan.  Really, it's not good at all. Want to know what the flavor is?  fucking CHEESEBURGER!!  and not even a GOOD cheeseburger.  It tastes like a McDonald's cheeseburger. ew ew ewwww!!!  Whoever's idea this was, should be dragged out into the middle of the street and shot.

B-day Wish list...

On Thursday April 5, I will be a quarter of a century old. Yikes. I'm planning a b-day bash at Ninja New York and i can't wait. A bunch of my closest friends are gonna be there, and it's gonna be insane. Ninja's jumping out of the ceiling, lighting things on fire. Think i'm kidding?  You Tube "Ninja New York" and witness the craze maze with your own two eyes.

Anyways, i came across some pretty rad stuff online, which, if i had a kajillion dollars, would probably buy. Alas, i'm a poor 20-something year old and so i'm just going to wallow in my emo misery and instead obsess over interweb pictures. (*tear)  Check it:

From pnutjewelery.com:

Today i went to the Garden State Plaza (haza) with my best friend Delia.  She wanted to go to LeSportSac to get a weekend bag and a tote.  I tried convincing her to get this awesome tote i loved - the print was of all these different country/city stickers - really colorful and fun.  So she decided to get both that and this polka dotted weekender bag. Cool.  So i'm waiting for her at the checkout and the woman bags both of the LeSportSacs. Delia is sometimes neurotic when it comes to certain things and she asked for two seperate bags. I was thinking to myself "jesus delia, what are you doing?" and then she hands me the one bag (i think she just wants me to carry it) and she goes "Happy Birthday!"  Sneaky sneaky sneaky!!!  She laughed and I yelled at her for spending so much on me.  But the bag is awesome and here's a pic:

xo

ps. is it lame that i totally relate to the new avril song in more ways than one?

February 10, 2007

ace and rubbish.

Two great words in which I stumbled across today: "ace" and "rubbish". My goal is now to try and use these words on a daily basis.

The new killers video is ace.
        1. it has an unidentified, oversized, really cute stuffed animal with buck teeth in it
        2. the first time i saw the video, at about :33, it shows them playing their instruments in an arcade -            i thought they were playing guitar hero guitars. This in my opinion would have made the video              THAT much cooler, but it's cool enough that i mistook it for such.
        3. any band that doesn't take themselves too seriously and can pull off wearing kimonos is                   okay by me.
        4. it takes place in japan. i <3 japan
        5. at the end of the video, they have the really cute-green-unidentified-oversized-buck tooth-stuffed  animal crawl into a capsule hotel with one of the dudes in the band. This is awesome on many levels, but mainly because it reminded me of when I got Chris Faller to believe that when the Hush kids go to Japan, that they would be staying in a hotel just like that in Osaka with capsules as their room (yes, they really do exist). I also told him that he would have to take one for the team and share a capsule with their guitar tech. He wasn't too pleased. This went on for a while until he eventually found out it was all a joke, and decided to get me back by pretending to be really pissed. It's unfortunate for him that I am really smart and didn't buy it for a second.

Onto other things... all of this Anna Nicole Smith media attention is rubbish. Aren't there more important things in this world to be focussing our attention on?  Like global warming and having a war-obsessed president in office for the next two years?  Yeah, i understand that what has happened to her over the past couple of months is some heavy shit - and i would NEVER wish it on anyone else.  But i also feel like it is a direct result of her trainwreck lifestyle and bad parenting. Obviously her son had problems, but those problems stemmed from somewhere. The fact that i'm talking about this is rubbish so i'm just gonna shut up.

over and out.

ps. i wanted to share with everyone this photo of my friend wil and i.  he has this burly beard and i was drinking from straws stuck in his facial hair the other night. he lives in brooklyn where they have weird fashions like wanting to look like navajo indians, or in this case, a hunter.  In our out kids?  You tell me.

January 30, 2007

Some exciting (and disturbing) stuff.

It is 25 degrees out, and i am sitting here at my desk drinking an iced hazelnut coffee with soy milk. Is that weird?

So, it's been a while since an update. Here are a few things I'd like to share with all you party people. Check it:

- Yesterday Ashley, Alex and myself recorded some vocals in the back studio for the new BOYS LIKE GIRLS video, The Great Escape!  Alan (who works in our office and is the mastermind behind all of the FOB vids) directed it and wanted to have a "crowd" sing on the last chorus in the song.  Well, we didn't have a crowd, but we did have the 3 of us!  So listen hard - actually, you probably won't have to listen THAT hard, but check it out - it's the 3 of us fools layered over and over and over again. Pretty cool eh?  It was a really fun experience - probably even more fun than when we sung on the GCH's record!  Smash and I are tinkering with the idea of forming a band. Anyone have suggestions for band names?

- So, onto other, more important things: http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/10584610.html#cutid1

I hope everyone who clicked on that was over the age of 18. And i hope you feel just as uncomfortable as I did when i saw the happy trail of Mr. Potter. That shit should be illegal! Ew ew ewwww

- On a serious note, I just got work the other day that THE HUSH SOUND is up for Spin.com's Band of the Year!!  It would mean the world to me (and them) if you could take a minute out of your schedule on Thursday and vote for em. Link to vote will be live here: http://www.spin.com/insidespin/2007/01/070129_artistoftheyear/

That's about it for now. Stay warm!  xo vipes

Out in "06: roommates who are slobs, Bally's, global warming.

In for "07: guitar hero II, beating guitar hero II, and seeing more of Doug with his shirt off. oh, and writing letters on postcards.

Out for "07: UGGS (even though they were out a million years ago... i think some people need to be reminded of this.) And you fucking hipsters that want to look like Navajo Indians with your stupid scarves tied around your necks. Go weave some baskets or something, assholes.

December 26, 2006

I never do sleep as well as I do in my old bed, in my old room, in my old house, in my old town.

I have been home in Montvale for the holidays, and it has been a strange yet rejuvinating past 4 days. I come back here and instantly feel at home whereas I still don't quite feel at home yet in the apartment i've been residing in since May. I'm not quite sure why - maybe it's because I don't have my mom there to make sure i'm eating well, or my dad around to remind me to lock up at night. My apartment always feels so cold... so unlike my parent's house which close friends say is floaded with "sleepy gas" because it is so warm and cozy and is always filled with a comforting aroma.

This time of year is especially nice, because it's tradition of sorts for all of my childhood friends to get together and hang out like old times. The 172 crew, hanging in the parent's basement like old times. I miss those days.

Reflecting on the past year alone, I can't believe how much I've grown and learned. About people, about my job, about myself.  Through friends lost and gained, places visited and left behind, to new beginnings and cherished endings... I feel like this has been the year where I've really left my childhood behind. It's a bittersweet thing, when you finally realize this milestone, but I'm okay with it... mostly because I know I'll always be a kid at heart.

Tomorrow is my sisters birthday. They'll be 22 (they're twins) and my mom and I are taking them into the city for lunch and to do some shopping. I'm planning on taking them to Union Square - around the area where I work since I know it best. Still deciding on New Year's plans... Panic! is playing in Times Square and I have passes, but i'm not so sure if i want to go. It gets pretty out of hand for New Years, and i'm not so sure I want to deal with all that, although it would be rad to hang with the Crush crew.  Another option is going to my friend Justin's in the heights - most of my friends will be there, and I know it's going to be so much fun.

Well, enough for tonight, my sister is nagging me to get off of her computer. my list of what was in/out for 2006 and in/out for 2007 will be up soon, so look out!

much love, d

Jersey Not Spot

Ahhh - The Garden State, New Jersey.  The Dirty Jerz.  The Armpit of America. (I think Long Island actually takes that award home).

Hi kids. My name is Danielle, aka Vipes and I was born and raised in NJ.  There are many interesting things about the Jerz that I feel I should share with you.  It’s not as bad as people make it out to be.  So I am here to share some points of interest about this underdog of a state and possibly clear up some fallacies while I’m at it.  So without further ado, this my friends, is why Jersey rules.

1.    We are famous for our Diners.  Next time you’re in town, hit up the Bendix diner on Rt. 17.  There’s this blind waiter who also happens to be a comedian. No joke, one time he was telling me about how much he loved girls with back acne.  When I asked him why, he said it was because they are easy to read.

2.    The smell on the Turnpike is from Staten Island’s trash being washed to our side.  Don’t let anyone tell you different.

3.    You know the Weird (Insert State Here) series you see in your local Barnes & Nobles?  Well, it actually originated in NJ as a local ‘zine called Weird N.J.  That’s right, NJ is definitely the weirdest of them all!  As a bored suburban high school kid, my friends and I had nothing better to do most of the time, so when we weren’t going to shows, we would drive around Northern NJ and find ways to amuse ourselves.  This would include finding abandoned asylums or colleges and exploring the haunting local folklore.  A lot of these places are now defunct, but two you might want to check out are: Stag Hill (home to the Jackson Whites) and Clinton Road.  Demons Alley was once among my favorites, but the abandoned neighborhood was burnt down a few years back. ☹

4.    We’ve got Atlantic City and Asbury Park.  Btw, if you are every fortunate enough to visit Asbury Park in the summertime, be sure to check out the tiki bar in the convention center.  The food, music and drink makes you feel like you were in Jamaica maxing out and jamming to a reggae band.

5.    We do not pronounce Jersey “Joi-sey”.

6.    The Sopranos is filmed here.

7.    We have Wawa’s – the best convenient store on the planet.

8.    All of Kevin Smith’s films take place in New Jersey. FYI: jersey in NO WAY is affiliated with or supports Ben Affleck’s career as both an actor and a human being.

9.    Saves the Day, Lifetime, My Chem, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen and Old Blue Eyes all got their start here.

10.    In New Brunswick, on the Rutgers campus, there are the infamous Grease Trucks. For the party after the party, you can head on over to these babies and get yourself a “Fat Momma” or a “Fat Bastard”. Pretty much a heart attack in a sandwich.  Chicken fingers, Mozzarella Stix, French Fries… it’s the mother of all sandwiches, believe you me.

11.    No matter where in the state you live, you are no more than an hour from two major cities – New York and Philadelphia.  You’re also no more than 10 minutes away from a mall. We also have beaches aka the Jersey Shore, mountains, marshes, forests, and the Jersey Devil!

12.    New Jersey is the birthplace of the motion picture camera, the drive-in movie, the boardwalk (I suggest visiting the one in Wildwood, NJ), saltwater taffy and the icecream cone!

13.     We don’t have to pump our own gas, suckers.

14.     Exit 172 on the parkway (Garden State Parkway for you foreigners) is the best, because that’s where I’m from. 172 crew reprezent!

15.    For a super good time (and deliciousness food) coupled with great live music, I would suggest checking out Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ.  It’s a restaurant with another room devoted to live music with a stage and all.  A lot of your favorite bands probably played there at some point. Also, one time I went there with Bob Morris of The Hush Sound, and we had the cheesiest quesadillas EVER. Seriously, that shit was melting in my mouth and probably also dripping down my chin onto my shirt.  Oh, and Bob got the nachos grande which was a mountain of holy goodness. Can you tell I love food?

Well, my time is up.  Have a swell day kids, and if you ever step foot in this state, drop me a line.

My 3 day adventure with the Hushies

I just returned from my trip to California and Arizona, where I rode around in a van with The Hush Sound for a few days. The trip was killer, and I'll try and sum it up for you.  Here we go:

DAY 1:  Los Angeles @ El Ray

I had to wake up at 5:30 in the morning to catch my 8:30a flight. Total bummout, but I was able to catch some Zzz's on the flight which ruled.  By the way, the new airport security no liquid rule has got to go.  I land in LAX around 11:30 and proceed to the car rental desk where i am told that they are out of Intermediate cars, but can either upgrade me to a Minivan or a Volvo. I'm sorry, but do i look like a 40 year old Soccer Mom?!  So I take the Volvo (which is amazing btw) and make my way to the Buzznet office where I meet up with Karen and Lizy for lunch. We walk through the park where the new Gym Class Heroes video was filmed, and wind up at this cute little diner.  They suggest i try the pastrami sandwich, so i do and it was delicious.  Conversation was funny and random ranging from horseback riding to stories about catching mice.  They are great girls.  Headed back to the Buzznet office to discuss some plans for this huge tour in the spring which I am really stoked about.

After the meeting, I met up with my friend Hadas and went to this hotel on Sunset for some drinks. I got a rasberry Mojito which hit the spot perfectly.  So refreshing.

After drinks, Hadas drove me back to the El Ray where I met up with the Hushies. I was so happy to see them along with my friend Conor who is out teching for them. He is one of my oldest friends, and I am so happy the band loves him. The show went really well - Patrick came out to sing on Don't Wake Me Up and it was fun having the Crush crew out for the show.

Afterwards, plans were to head to this Shepard Ferry party but LA decides to close everything down by 2am so it didn't make sense to go. We chilled at the hotel for a bit before deciding to go get food. We wound up at this fast food beef bowl place, and let me tell you... It was the FOULEST SHIT i have ever put in my body in my entire life. I took one bite and spit it out. Please, for your sake, never ever eat there. See my pictures for proof.

Day 2: Anaheim @ Chain Reaction

This show was sold out weeks prior, and it was off the hook. I have never seen a crowd go that crazy for this band before and I couldn't have been happier. We planned a little birthday surprise for Dan from This Is Me Smiling, and nailed him with a bunch of whipped cream pies when he came out to sing on Don't Wake Me Up. The crowd got involved by throwing confetti and streamers - he was definitely very surprised. Pete, Bonnie and Joe came out for the show and it was awesome having them there.

By the way, Chain Reaction is my favorite venue of all time because they have Guitar Hero II out next to the bar.  And just for the record, I would like to let everyone know that before the show, I had a little tourney going on with all of the This Providence dudes, and I kicked ALL of their asses. I didn't step down until Sheldon from TIMS stepped in and shredded my ass to the ground. Thank you.

Day 3: Tempe, AZ

We drove 1/2 way through the night and stayed at a hotel in Blythe, CA.  On the drive to Tempe, Merch boy Adam, myself and Slobert Morris played an intense game of Texas Holdem. We put in all of $12 and went "ballz to the wall" during the last few rounds before taking a nap. The show that night was more low key, but still a good one. I'm glad it wasn't too crazy because I wasn't feeling well. Had some wings and beer nextdoor and then headed back over to see Murder By Death. They have a cello player named Sara, and she is one of the most captivating mucisians I have ever laid my eyes on.  After the show, we went back to the hotel for a hot second and then went to Chris's friend's house.  His friend had Guitar Hero II, so I'm sure you can take a guess of what I did all night. Exactly. We left his house around 2:30 and at this point all I wanted to do was sleep since I had to leave to hotel at 4:30a for my 6:30 flight back home. But the boys were rowdy and decided to hang out with Bobby-Bo before I left. At 4:30, i said my goodbyes and hopped on the shuttle to the airport.  Needless to day, I slept on both flights back to NJ, and then slept a whole 12 hours straight when i got back home.

Crazy Indian!

Hello all. I am tired and ready to go home. But no. I signed up for a gym (which will remain nameless) with the intention of cancelling my membership after a month because there is NO WAY IN HELL i am committing to a gym for 3 years. Seriously, who does that?  Gyms have it all wrong - they should offer 3 month plans, and lower their prices because then i would totally be down.  Encourage people to get in shape and be healthy, you know?  Besides, who really likes to commit to anything in these days?  Not many people i know.  Aaaanyways, my plan is to cancel my membership after the first 30 days, but in order to do that i have to a) go a minimum of 12 times and b) meet with a personal trainer at least once.  If i do not do these things, then I will be forced to pay a monthly fee of $62 for 3 fucking years. Yeah Right. Not only can I not afford that shit, but I don't even know what the hell I am doing a Month from now, let alone the next 3 years of my life.  Assholes. Besides, I live in an area that has an abundance of hotels.  And my plan after I cancel, is to sneak into hotel fitness centers and work out there... you know, get into a weekly cycle.  Each week I will sneak into a different hotel's fitness center and I will spend hours on the treadmill and not even pay a dime. Hell, maybe there will even be a pool or a sauna... OR if i'm really lucky, maybe a hot tub!!  This calls for some heavy duty investigating.  I need to get on this STAT.

On a completely seperate note, last night I went to go see my friend Coley's band The Queen Killing Kings play at Lit Lounge in NYC. They were awesome!  If you like really good pop music, you should check them out (www.myspace.com/thequeenkillingkings). They kind of remind me of a more modern day Billy Joel. Piano and Drums. You'll be seeing more of these dudes for sure.. in some shape or form...  Anyways, after they played, I brought them to this restaraunt the Crush Cats refer to as the Crazy Indian restaraunt.  It is seriously fucking CRAZY.  They've got millions of chili lights drooping from the ceiling with wrapping paper plastered on the walls and weird thingamabobs hanging overhead. I lied and said it was Coley's b-day (which it will be on Friday) just so they could experience the "birthday song".  All of a sudden, all of the lights went out and the music started thumping.  "Happy Birthday to You!" in this crazy techno/Indian esque rant. The lights were manually being flicked on and off and 3 dishes of pineapple icecream were brought out, one with a candle in it. Fucking Crazy. I love this place, and I think everyone needs to experience it at least once in their lives. It's on 1st ave b/w 5th and 6th and it's called Milan.  Don't let anyone sucker you into any of the adjacent Indian Restaraunts either. You've been warned. Check out pictures in my photos!

Later haters.

Marie Antoinette

Last night I went to the movies with my friend Joe and saw Marie Antoinette.  It's interesting the way she was portrayed in the movie - even though Marie Antoinette was despised and rediculed by the general public for being overly lavish and irresponsible, the film somehow makes the audience sympathize with her and her situation of being thrown into power at such a young age.  Do you agree with this statement and can you think of any current day situations that parallel this? (maybe celebreties, politicians, etc.) Leave your comments below!!

ps. the soundtrack definitely gets an A+

CMJ week from Hell (con'd)

So, first off, let me say that Halloween in NYC is the bomb shit. All the freaks come out from the woodworks and crowd the sidewalks with some of the most intense and creative costumes i've seen in my life. Me and Jessie Poland (who i will refer to now on as J.Poland, and believe me, you'll be hearing a lot more of her in the near future) went to the Halloween parade on 6th Ave. She was a devil, and well... I was me with this crazy Asian doll inspired makeup on. I had this amazing idea for a costume, but i'm afraid with lack of time and motivation, it will have to wait until next year to surface. ANYWAYS.... the parade was jaw dropping. marching skulls and gigantic pumpkins... the attention to detail was magnificent. Afterwards, we got a slice of "Za" and made way to Irving Plaza to see a few bands play. Ran into a bunch of friends including Ben Jorgenson who's costume was so awesome that he looked just like that dude from that band Armor For Sleep (can you smell the sarcasm?), Wes Borland, Borat, and a few others. We had a few drinks and then headed down to Black and White. It was like a family reunion - sooo many friends were there from out of town because of CMJ and it was a really nice surprise!  I was especially stoked on seeing the dudes from the Matches.  I love that band.  I've known the guys for about 3 years now, and they are seriously some of the nicest dudes out there, not to mention both of their records are incredible.

Wednesday was a struggle. I went to work and wanted nothing more than to lay down and take a nap. On my way home, I decided to stop by BBKings to see Wax On Radio play since it was on my way to Port Authority, and I wound up being fed warm whiskey (ew) from Keith of Days Away (also another amazing band) and staying until 12:30.

On Thursday, I had to skip out on seeing a few bands i wanted to check out including Boys Like Girls (who i hear put on an helluva live show) and The Horrors (check out their video for Sheena Is A Parasite - it will scare the SHIT out of you).  Instead, I went home and went to the gym. I didn't really want to do this, but I felt obligated. See, if i want to cancel my membership after the first month of joining (which i do, because I hate the thought of committing to 3 years) i have to go a minimum of 12 times and train with a personal trainer.  Last week I went 4 times, and last night was my first time this week. ugh. It's cool though, because i'm starting to get back into training again which makes me feel better, but sore as HELL.

Okay kids, i'm out. it's 8:20 and Decemberists play at hammerstein at 9!  Next week - normalcy. I can't wait.

The week from hell (sort of)

This has been the never-ending week out of hell. Don't get me wrong, it's awesome that NYC gets to host this incredible music marathon that is CMJ, and it's even more awesome that i get to hang out with friends who I don't get to see that often and get into shows for free. But man, I am BEAT. I mean, totally wiped out. And the fact that Halloween fell smack dab in the middle of this chaos doesn't really help.

Where to begin?  Saturday night. Halloween party in Brooklyn. I definitely got wasted and spent 15 minutes in my car sobering up with Joe and Delia by eating bagel-chip sandwiches. The only reason I remember that is seriously because the next day, i awoke on my friend delia's couch and stumbled out to the crumb-kingdom that was my car. That night was the first night I experimented with bright red lipstick, and I must say - I am totally hooked.

Sunday, after doing some laundry, I made my way into NYC to hammersteim ballroom to see my boys in Gym Class Heroes play. Watching them from one of the boxes next to the balcony was amazing. They got the crowd so pumped and it put a huge smile on my face to see everyone waving their arms in the air and getting into it.  Afterwards, I was in the mood to go see a movie (I really want to see Marie Antoinette, Running With Scissors, and Stranger Than Fiction) but nothing I wanted to see was playing nearby so I went home.

Monday was the official kickoff to CMJ - the Syndicate Party. This party is always a lot of fun. There is an open bar, live music, and free food. Incase you don't know, I really like things that are free.  Especially food. Anyways, what really made this year's party great, was the fact that there was a Guitar Hero booth. I seriously was looking forward to it all day.  See, I don't own a playstation, and the first time I ever played GH was at my friend Alicia's apartment 2 months ago. Ever since, I've been obsessed but haven't been able to play! This is why I have to take advantage of situations like these as much as possible.  There was a photographer guy taking and printing out pictures - i think he hated me by the end of the night because i kept on bugging him.... but check out my photos... theres one in there!  Afterwards i went to meet up with my friend jack at Irving plaza and we went to go get some TB. (i love taco bell). Ran into Erik (some of you may know him as a fellow OCK) and kept him company while he waited for janet (his mom) to pick him up. She was sweet enough to offer us a ride back to the jerz and from there, we chilled up on my roof and talked about how sketch my roommates are and what badasses we were in high school (i made international news for my senior prank fyi). Note: apparently we are both still pretty badass.

Tuesday: HALLOWEEN. tbc'd...
